Mud hydrometer, also called drilling fluid densitometer, is an instrument used to determine the specific gravity of mud, and its unit is grams/cubic centimeter.

The mud hydrometer is an unequal-armed lever-type instrument, with a main blade set into the main scale of the graduated lever as a fulcrum, a test cup attached to the left end of the lever with a lid on the top of the cup, and a balance cylinder connected to the right end of the lever, with a plug on top of the cylinder containing a weight (lead pellet) used to calibrate the lever for increased equilibrium. Do not unscrew the upper plug unless the instrument is recalibrated. A leveling bubble is mounted on the lever at the top of the main blade, which indicates that the lever is in a horizontal position when the bubble is centered. There is a movable weight on the lever with a screw behind it to facilitate free movement of the weight along the groove of the lever without dislodging it, and there is a small screw hole at the bottom of the front of the weight for adjusting the weight of the weight, which should not be turned unless the instrument is re-calibrated or the instrument will be inaccurate. The lever rule is placed on the main cutter of the support base, and the lever rule can be swung flexibly. In order to prevent excessive tilting of the main ruler, there is a main ruler bracket on the support base, when not in use, the main ruler can be made to fall on this bracket.
Remove the lid of the cup, filled with mud samples to be measured, such as mud immersed in air bubbles, you need to gently knock the test cup until the air bubbles overflowed out of the cup (such as the measurement of cement needs to be swung cement mud 25 times).
Put the lid back on the cup and turn it until it is tight, so that the excess mud and air can be squeezed out from the small hole in the center of the lid.
Wipe off any excess mud from the outside surface of the scale and the lid.
Align the main blade of the scale with the knife and place it on the support base.
Move the weights to the edge near the edge, and then slowly move the weights to the right, so that the main lever scale to maintain a horizontal balance position (the balance of the main lever scale, can be used to measure the balance of the level bubble).
Readings, weights on the left side of the line on the line is the specific gravity of the mud measured.
Instruments need to be tested before leaving the factory, check whether the mud hydrometer is accurate, can be put in the mud cup full of 20 ℃ clean fresh water, according to the correct method of measurement of the specific gravity of 1 for the standard, such as does not comply with the balance of the cylinder can be adjusted in the weight. After each use should be thoroughly washed, dried and put back in the box. Each instrument's cup cover, level bubble and weights are selected before the factory calibration, shall not be arbitrarily switched or disassembled, so as not to cause large errors.
Structure and technical parameters
NA-1 type sand content meter consists of a 200 mesh screen equipped with a cartridge and a funnel corresponding to the diameter of the cartridge and a glass measuring tube with 0-100﹪ scale.
1. The slurry filled to the test tube marked with "slurry" on the word at the line, add water to the marked "water" at the line, plug the mouth of the tube and vibration.
2. Pour the mixture into the filter cartridge, discard the liquid through the filter sieve, and then add water to the test tube, shaking and then poured into the filter cartridge. Repeat until the tube is clean.
3. Rinse the sand obtained on the sieve with clean water, and remove the residual mud.
4. Put the funnel set into the cartridge, and then slowly turn over, and insert the funnel mouth into the measuring tube, with water to the sand attached to the screen all washed into the tube.
5. Wait for the sand to settle, read out the percentage content of sand.
6. Wash and dry the instrument and put it into the box.

This instrument is used to measure the viscosity of mud, the viscosity of mud is expressed in seconds by the time it takes to flow 500ml of mud out of the viscometer.
The outflow tube of the mud viscometer is a fine tube with aperture of 5mm and length of 100mm. Clean water 700 ml is injected into the funnel of the viscometer, and the time needed to flow out 500 ml is 15 seconds. The measuring cup with compartments has a capacity of 500 ml at one end and 200 ml at the other end.
A funnel shaped container with an outflow tube at the end, the instrument is fitted with a handle with two keyholes so that the instrument remains vertical when hung on a nail on the wall. A cylinder separated into two parts of the measuring cup, front and back can be used, one side of the capacity of 500ml, the other side of the capacity of 200ml. In addition with the instrument with the mud of 1000ml measuring cup, its diameter and the viscometer close to the mouth, so that the sieve can be attached to the two on top of the screen for the filtering of mud, the sieve for every inch of 16 holes.
Before measuring the viscosity, first brush the viscometer with water, then mix the slurry for 1 minute in the test slurry mixer, use a measuring cup to inject 500ml and 200ml (700ml) of slurry through the sieve into the viscometer, and plug the outlet with a finger to prevent the slurry from flowing out.
Measurement of the 500ml measuring cup placed under the flow outlet, let go of the finger blocking the outlet, while driving stop watch, to be full of mud flow 500ml measuring cup, to reach its edge, press the stopwatch, write down the time of mud flow out, is the viscosity of the mud. If in the determination of viscosity before, not in accordance with the above method of mud in the mixer fully mixed, the mud should be from the measuring cup back into the viscometer, repeat the measurement, until the outflow time is no longer reduced.
It is convenient to hang the viscometer on the wall for testing so that only one person can operate it, and the viscometer, screen and measuring cup must be rinsed with water after measurement.
Viscometer should be commonly used clean water to measure the outflow time, which is called viscometer "water value". If the water value is greater than 15 seconds, that is, the outflow tube is not rinsed clean, available soft brush, cloth, etc. to flush the tube, such as less than 5 seconds, it can not be used, the normal value of water for 15 ± 0.5 seconds.
